Well.. sometimes, a little flamewar may be welcome, especially for those living in countries currently enjoying an unusual cold weather. ;-)
But going back to your original question.
You wrote about a "mounted volume"; does it go about a sharepoint served by a remote server?
More generally, could you provide us with a bit more context, allowing us to better understand the raised password dialog box?
