Changing default alarms in Calendar

Some aspects of OS X are getting to be more and more restricted, to
the point of being almost useless.
One of them is the default alert settings in Calendar on Mountain
Lion. All you get is the ability to pick one of several predefined
alarms, eg, 1 day before (9AM). You cannot pick the time of the alarm
for Birthdays or All day events. You cannot pick what happens for the
alert, eg, what sound, how you are notified, etc.
And particularly for the birthdays, you cannot even alter the alarm
manually as they are generated automatically using the default value.
Apparently, in Lion, there used to be plist files which you could
edit to change the default values. In Mountain Lion, these plist
files no longer seem to exist.
That would seem to leave AppleScript (maybe...).
The dictionary seems to allow for the various values to be changed
for alarms. I was wondering if anyone had found out how to change the
default settings using AppleScript?
Or maybe how to cycle through all the birthdays to shut off the sound?
Thanks
David
