Actually, although I think Shane’s is the best way by far, since you are using Smile, why not go all the way.
I believe Smile can tackle pdfs.
I know for sure you can write to pdf and script the pdf with Smile.
Since I haven’t been AppleScripting for a while I did not try. But you can give it a shot.
