Hi Simon,
I've been scripting for over 15 years and, most of the time, I feel like a beginner. It has nothing to do with my skill level or experience.
First and foremost, it's because Apple has seen fit to keep us all off balance by continually moving the target. Methods and procedures that work one day are broken the next. Or they disappear entirely and in their places, if we're lucky, are different ones. If we're not lucky, they just disappear, period, and we're forced to look for workarounds.
The second thing that makes me feel like a perpetual novice is that new projects involve applications and technologies that I've not worked with before. At the moment, for example, I'm learning how to script the creation of PGP-encrypted zip archives and transfer them via an SFTP connection that is secured by both password and SSH key.
Do these things make me fumble around and ask stupid questions? Yes. Do I often feel frustrated and foolish--even stupid? Absolutely. I've made my share of stupid-sounding posts on this list. But don't tell me that the level of my apparent "expertise" makes me ineligible to post here.
I appreciate your contributions to the AS Users list, Simon, and there have been many. There are many others (including Luther) who post here and, all taken together, the whole is much greater than the sum of the individual messages. I check every post for whatever gems of wisdom they may contain. Of course, some don't contain any gems.
Generally, when I see a post that is inane or OT or flaming, I just ignore it. Yours is an exception, because it hits too close to where I live. If Luther's posts are unsuitable, then mine are, too. I hope that Luther continues to use this list as he has--and that you will continue to post as well.
The world has enough arrogance already, and too little tolerance. So lighten up, Simon. If that doesn't work for you, then perhaps YOU should try something different. Please just stop posting vicious condemnations here.
Thanks,
Stan C.
