Title: Re: coercing results of UI elements to paragraph delimited list
Phil,
You should consider Shane’s suggestion, as it would also be my suggestion. Showing the students a better or easier way to get into scripting should be a high priority for you, right? So showing “free built in” tools is fine, but only to a point. But if you
then show SD, even as a short aside, you can take some people’s interest up a notch, because the technology of Applescript won’t be so mystifying. Seeing step by step output is invaluable to learning (whether AS or C or objective-C) and regular ASE can’t do
that!
Let me point to myself as an example. I used the free AS Editor for years, literally about 8 years. I had even heard of ScriptDebugger but did not want to use “non-standard” tools. I learned about all the basics but still had trouble with things when scripts
became complex. Well I was depriving myself of a VERY USEFUL tool. Once I bought SD, I could see so much more of what went on with scripts. I was stepping through and seeing my variables change on each step, I could step into and out of functions. ASE can
do none of that. I seriously became more productive and less confused about coding within a few weeks of using SD (and fixing a lot of mistakes I had been making). Now I ONLY use SD or Xcode for “big” projects (which BTW is even worse with Applescript now
but that’s a different topic). I never touch ASE any more, it’s just so pointless. ASE is a Yugo, and SD is a Cadillac. They both can get you there, but the Caddy is way nicer- it has AC and built in Navigation (aka SD’s debug mode and step-through).
Please, don’t consider it helpful to hide information about SD from your students. If I had the chance to go back I would have bought SD years before I did.
Chris
