Thanks for your thoughts, Chris.

I don't' know where this notion that I'm going to "hide" information has come from. In writing any instructional material, the author has to prioritise information. It's a complex equation between thinking about the immediate learning objective, the student's time, the student's motivation, the student's current level of proficiency at what I call "dependency tasks", the students proximal learning stage or stages (i.e, what can they reasonably expect to learn next given what they've learned already), the long term learning objectives and the student's resources (these can include anything from money to equipment to access to information sources like teachers).

Suffice to say, given all those factors (and there's a couple more I haven't mentioned, but you get the idea!) , instructional design is not as simple as it may look from the outside, and one instructor's decisions may not be easy to comprehend by other instructors or sometimes by students themselves unless the instructor builds into the material an explanation of the teaching methodology, something that I do in the book but haven't done here, because it would just be too laborious and lack context without the material itself.

What I'm trying to say in a long-winded kind of way is there is little point us having a debate about the merits of SD for what I'm writing. I don't doubt SD has been a lifesaver for you and for many others, but for the book I'm writing, introducing SD is a low priority. Other things are more pressing, and as I said at the outset of this highly OT post (and hopefully the final one regarding SD, which has nothing to do with the question I asked…), its a complex balance. I'm not hiding anything from anyone. I'm aiming to provide the best learning experience I can given the variables I have to deal with.

Best

Phil
