Temporary sound control (boot chime)

Is there some way to mute the boot chime?

Being discussed on another list, seems the answer is different for each model of Mac. Some, simply plug in headphones; others, the chime bypasses this and plays through the speaker anyway.

Can the boot chime be muted?
