I used …

do shell script "pmset noidle >/dev/null 2>&1 & echo $!"

as suggested by Paul Scott and it works correctly.

I have a number of scripts that use a variant of this …

set soundpid to do shell script "afplay " & soundPath & " &> /dev/null & echo $!"

and have never encountered any problem, so I also tried this …

do shell script "pmset noidle >/dev/null & echo $!"

But the script does not work correctly without the "2>&1".

Can someone wearing a unix hat explain when "2>&1"
should and should not be used?
