So,
I should avoid the Automator Runner. Can someone suggest how to incorporate an open dialog that works with plain AppleScript? Or does it have to be an AppleScript Objective C application just for this "choose file and/or folder" need?

That
isn't really AppleScript Obj-C stuff, but rather using AppleScript Studio-style commands in Automator Runner. Automator Runner no longer supports that, so if you upgrade systems you're likely to be caught out (although it might keep working, and just be uneditable).
