I mostly agree with Yvan about what he said, except the word
"métro" which is in fact an "apocope" (suppression of phonemes
or syllables, for convenience). I can think of dozens of examples
of "apocopes" in French, so the French are willing to allow their
language to evolve, but for "new" words, the results are nothing
short of catastrophic. They easily accepted the word "pizza" from
the Italians, but refuse the term "Hot-Dog" in English.

"métro" was an apocope at the very beginning but, since 1891 it's validated as a true word of its own.
The "Dictionnaire historique de la langue française" states:
Chemin de fer métropolitain (1873) elliptiquement métropolitain (1874), est couramment abrégé en MÉTRO [nom masculin] (1891) avant même la réalisation de ce système de transport à Paris. Il s'agit très probablement d'un anglicisme fait sur metropolitan railway au sens de « chemin de fer urbain », s'agissant d'abord de Londres, puis de Paris.
As you see,
(1) we are perfectly able to borrow words from other languages when we decide to do that. (2) the widely accepted dictionary edited by "Dictionnaire Le Robert" clearly describe métro as a [nom masculin]
