Hello John,
So, gmail accounts... I've one too here (mainly for "just in case" purposes), but can't reproduce the problem any further with that account.
Now, the "set quote original message to false" workaround makes me think of a confusion that could occur between the various mailboxes as (strangely) implemented by gmail.
Probably "drafts" and "trash", possibly "all messages".
Perhaps do our settings differ (both in Mail's and gmail's accounts configuration)?
Do you encounter the problem when replying to a message "by hand", through the GUI, as well?
Or is it restricted to AppleScript scripts?
