The logical replacements for aliases are bookmarks. We've already seen that open handlers get passed bookmarks instead of aliases these days, and they serve a similar function. An alias file in recent versions of the OS is just bookmark data stored in a file (along with a preview image).
It's also possible there'll be some redefinition of alias to encompass bookmarks, through a separate object having the same name. That's what happened over time with different iterations of the file class, and to some extent with the text class.
But history suggests these sorts of changes tend to be made when there's at least a hint of urgency, and not before.
And next maybe the time conversion functions will be deprecated, and we'll get dates that work properly :-)
