kMDItemWhereFroms

  • Subject: kMDItemWhereFroms

I have an old script, "Go!Source", that would extract metadata from a downloaded file (usually a pdf)
which contains this code ...

(quoted form of (POSIX path of itemAlias))
do shell script "mdls -name kMDItemWhereFroms -raw " & the result
set whereFromsText to the result

and allows me to 1. select a file; 2. run "Go!Source"; 3. select a url; 4. Open the url.

It still works, but only with files downloaded long ago. PDF files recently "downloaded" simply do not have the 'kMDItemWhereFroms' metadata written to them.

Once upon a time, PDF files could be downloaded directly by Safari. I am now running Lion 10.7.5 with Safari 6.1.3 and PDFs can no longer be downloaded directly, but now require Adobe Reader to download files. Perhaps Adobe Reader does not write this data.

Does anyone have any insight into this problem ?
