I presume the system caches the results, and flushes the cache every so often. 

I couldn't find a significant difference between being online or offline.

I suspect it's a bit more complex than that. OTOH, if it's a script *in use*, rather than being played with, and it's only run infrequently, 6 seconds will seem a considerable delay.
