Hey James,
It works just like 'date' does from the shell, BUT you have to install it. You can do that with MacPorts or HomeBrew, or you can build it yourself from the command line. I use MacPorts myself.
MacPorts requires that Xcode be installed. I don't know about HomeBrew.
