What is the big difference?

Are you perhaps asking with respect to particular applications, such as
Microsoft Word and Excel? If so, I could venture a few differences, the main
one being that they use different programming languages, a secondary one
being that Microsoft provides a way to store macros within the files
(documents) themselves while AppleScripts are stored and run elsewhere,
outside the files. If you're asking generally, take Shane's advice.
