They are, but they don't really solve the problem. At least, they can only be used for ordering characters that are part of the strict ASCII A-z set, where they are equivalent to ASCII numbers. Beyond that, all bets are off -- and in some cases id will return a list of numbers, so code needs to consider that option.

I suspect the OP is after more than the simple case he posted, so it might help if he explains what he's after.
