Hey There,
That's going to be cumbersome and probably quite slow.
If you're parsing a monster file then you want to be using the Satimage.osax or Smile if you want to stay with AppleScript - OR you want to use something like Perl - which is designed to parse monster files efficiently.

The Satimage.osax installer installes one file:
/Library/ScriptingAdditions/Satimage.osax
The full Smile package installs:
/Library/ScriptingAdditions/FITS.osax/
/Library/ScriptingAdditions/Numerics.osax/
/Library/ScriptingAdditions/Satimage.osax/
/Library/ScriptingAdditions/XMLLib.osax/
And the Smile application folder:
/Applications/Smile/
That's it.
