From that, it's clear that any portion of a file name that can be interpreted as a number, for purposes of sorting, will be. And, of course, leading zeros have no significance in a numeric sort.
Outdated or not, this seems to be the explanation for this behavior.
Consequently, the Finder is seeing files which are not there while the '... as alias' conversion does not see them. Using aliases or System Events seems to be the proper work-around for this "problem".
