Agreed.
For my own use, I've written a library of file-handling routines that utilize "do shell script" calls for everything. (Except HFS-to-POSIX path conversions are done using your ASObjC Runner FBA.) Despite the overhead of the "do shell script" command, compared to the Finder or System Events, it's light-speed fast.
