First, I'm not suggesting doom. Believe it or not, I'm a bit more optimistic than it might appear. I'm merely suggesting the relative renaissance of interest of the past few releases might end, with a return to the policy of life-support.
The problem with your argument, it seems to me, is that today there is another contender to fill that need: Javascript for Automation. It might not be well implemented, but it's probably going to be in competition with AppleScript for development resources -- and it fills the same need.
(Interestingly, of the positive comments I've seen about it, the ability to access Cocoa is usually highlighted as one of the pluses.)
Now JXA might be as bad as some suggest and end up going nowhere. But equally someone might decide that the best way to fix it is to throw all the automation resources behind it. Who knows? The point is that the automation situation has changed: AppleScript *could* be killed without leaving the hole it would have in the past.
And I think talk of Apple being unable to afford to drop something is the sort of hubris that has brought several companies badly undone over the years.
