You can also use keyboard shortcuts to change view: command-1 for description, command-2 for result, and command-3 for the log. The Help file lists the last two swapped.

It's common to lots of apps (including mine!). I've been trying to pin it down exactly, and decided it's a result of using a segmented control like the one for View in Script Editor. In such cases you have multiple buttons but only one label, and therefore label-only doesn't give you access to all controls. I notice that Pages doesn't give you the option of text-only.
Hmmm. I just tried a test of removing the View control from SE's toolbar, and it didn't make any difference, so maybe there's something else involved (doing it did crash SE, though). And it also happens in Script Debugger, which doesn't use any segmented controls. Maybe it happens when the app does something that changes the state of a button.
It's an odd thing in some places. What should happen in the Finder when you click on Search as text-only, for example?
Regardless, I think it's more an OS-level problem. That's my excuse, anyway ;-)
