Learn AppleScript. No question. JavaScript for Automation is half-baked, half-broken, and not a competent alternative - never mind replacement - to it.

AS may be creaky, confusing, and painful, but it's the only [supported] option that does application scripting right. There are several good books available*, and the veteran ASers here and at MacScripter.net will be happy to help out should you get stuck.
