I believe Shane’s answer solved your problem and is an excellent solution.
However, if I may, I can suggest Smile.
Smile opens a pict file and it can save it as a jpg.
Smile Smile is scriptable back and forth, this is another possibility.
It obviously requires you to download Smile if you don’t have it.
But there you go, another solution.
