Why not create a script in FileMaker with the single step Commit Records, and then call that script from AS?

Because FileMaker's AppleScript support is minimal, it's usually best to perform as many steps as possible as FileMaker scripts, using AS merely to call the FileMaker scripts and interface with other applications.
