I can easily prevent any extraneous output in AppleScript by placing “return” as the last statement. But there does not seem to be any way to prevent it in _javascript_. Any ideas?

That's interesting. I don't know offhand if it's correct behavior or not. Please file a bug report: https://developer.apple.com/bug-reporting/
