Hi scripters,
I read Kindle books on my iPhone, and on my Mac if I reboot it to PC (Boot Camp), but wish I could read them on Mac OS. Any ideas what Amazon would need to do with their app to make it at least UI scriptable? I tried adding it to the Accessibility table in Sys Prefs/Privacy, but that makes no difference to what VoiceOver says, unknown, for any element not part of the menu bar. However, all basic menus [i.e] File, Edit, View, are read correctly. The text appears to be unselectable via keyboard controls, and no Speech submenu appears under the Edit menu. Also, when I try to read the About box, to see if there’s a “check for update” control, VoiceOver quits and restarts; it’s like there’s even a conflict between Kindle and VO. Tried live chat with an Amazon CSR, but I might as well have been talking to a machine <lol> It feels like it’s just not in their business agenda to address VoiceOver compatibility.
Is it worth trying to use UI Browser to find out what these “unknown” elements are? Or, is this likely a legal issue relating to book publishers and copyright? If it is legal, I won’t waste energy trying to make accessibility scripts. Nonetheless, if Kindle talks on the IOS devices, I see no reason why it should be so radically incompatible with any speech on the Mac. Kindle Cloud Reader is a different animal again. It’s a web app that runs in Chrome and Safari, and I was able to get it speaking all of its elements, and some text by using the Speak hot key defined in System Preferences, so this service may be more promising. Is a web app AppleScriptable?
Thanks for any insight :-)
