When you've finished with a file in Image Events, you should close it -- your script doesn't.

There are two other issues with Image Events:

* At least in Mavericks and earlier, it has the same image-caching memory problem. There's a thread at macscripter.net about it, and with your talk of thousands of files, you'll probably need to have it quit and relaunch Image Events regularly.

* Last I looked it has several bugs once you start manipulating images. So if you come back to the script and decide to change it -- say, to set a maximum image size -- you might well find yourself forced to start over again with something else. It seems to be another victim of AS neglect.

I'm also surprised that you raised the issue of speed, yet you not only use the Finder, you use it for things like getting the name of a file, rather than parsing the path using text item delimiters.
