I've made a living doing only AppleScript work for the last 12 years, or so, for my employer, Color Technology Inc. (CTI), which provides print- and web-technology services. Another CTI employee does AppleScripting about half the time. AppleScript is most evident in our graphics work with Nike, which is based here in the Portland, Oregon, area. For them, we automate image creation and InDesign page builds, along with data crunching, and other stuff.
Our largest Nike project involves more than 50,000 footwear photographs per year. Each image is color corrected, scaled, cropped, sharpened, posted for softproofing, tracked in multiple databases, assigned to humans for manual work, archived, and distributed--all by AppleScript. Our second-largest project generates thousands of InDesign pages per year containing Nike footwear, apparel, and equipment that are targeted to retailers of Nike products.
CTI probably couldn't compete for Nike work, if not for the cost-saving efficiency of AppleScript. Most of our processes run 24/7, but a few are manually triggered on demand. Much like Jon, we've built dozens (not hundreds) of our own scripted programming tools, including a code repository with automated project creation, versioning, and deployment. On the whole, I'd say that scripting beats working and that I'm *very* lucky to be doing it.
