Add user button to Mail message title bar?

From what I read one can use Applescript and Xcode to create quite sophisticated applications.

But I’m looking to do something a bit simpler (?). I’d like to add “previous message” and “next message” buttons at the top of all message windows. that would close the current message and open the next or previous one.

Is this something that would be straightforward to do using the tools mentioned? (Note the absence of the term “easy”…)

Thanks,
Dave
