Simpler is in the eye of the beholder on this one. Writing an app is one thing; making changes to another app is something else entirely. Think about the security implications if it were simple.

No. Plugins can be written for Mail, but they require Objective-C and are far from simple. They also tend to break and need re-working with every Mail update. That said, there are some brave souls writing them, so you might want to see if what you want is available.
Even without the problem of the buttons, I'm not sure AppleScript can get you close.
