I haven’t needed to do this in some time (years), but it worked for me by including the HFS path in the “tell application” statement.
Ex:
tell application “Mac HD:Applications:FileMaker Pro 12:FileMaker Pro.app
We use the posix path to target the correct version of an app:
tell app "/Applications/Adobe InDesign CS6/Adobe InDesign CS6.app"
