Converting shell scripts to apple scripts

I'm new to apple scripts. I have read there is a way to wrap existing shell scripts into an apple script without doing a rewrite from scratch..

Can anyone tell me how this is done? Where are the apple scripts then placed in the directory tree so they can be run from anywhere?

My goal is to run these scripts with a touchpad and/or the voice commands function introduced with os10.10. I'm using the latter version.

Thanks.
