Are they iCloud-based? As Yvan says, that can make a big difference.

I did some a script for someone a while back that involved searching for events, and it was quicker to skip Calendar.app and use AppleScriptObjC to script the Event Store directly. I'd guess the same holds for creating events. Doing it that way gives you the ability to control saves and commits, so you can batch things, which might help things along. But I'm just guessing; I've never actually done that side of things.
