Well, that may be ONE source of troubles only.
The problem exists (at least) since 10.6.8: Here, the formatting preferences disappear EACH time, a script does not run or terminate because of an error, which may be malformatted or missing prefs, properties or apps to be adressed, typing errors asf.
As an example (among a lot others): I have scripts that should get a value from a plist file. If I mistype the corresponding key, bingo, the preferences are set to the default ones.
And unfortunately, I'm not the best of the scripters worldwide  :-(
