For many years, people have been reporting here and elsewhere that their formatting preferences sometimes get mysteriously reset to defaults. Last time the discussion came up here, Nigel Garvey mentioned a connection with the "choose application" dialog. (The same dialog appears when you try to compile a script and a target application can't be found.)
Anyway, I had a look recently at the com.applescript.plist preference file where the formatting is stored, and I noticed the only other entry was for ChooseApplicationBounds, which seemed a bit of a coincidence. So with the .plist file open, I ran the script "choose application", closed the resulting dialog -- and the .plist file's entry for AppleScriptSourceAttributes disappeared before my eyes.
So I think we have definitive proof of the culprit at last...
