Shane Stanley recently commented on an issue similar to this.
Calendar's Bundle ID still cites iCal:
com.apple.iCal
The most consistent method of talking to it is to use the Bundle ID:
tell application id "com.apple.iCal" # Stub end tell
This might very well take care of the intermittent hangs — but there's no guarantee of course — you'll just have to try it.
