Of course, it's often useful but when a script behave well in SD but fails in Script Editor it doesn't.
You may find the culprit in the short thread : I already wrote in the thread that it's resembling to a bug but as Python is involved I'm not sure of that. As I'm not the script's author, I decided that writing a report was a task for the author whose English is the main language ;-)

Sounds like a Script Editor bug! How did it do outside the editing environments?
SD is not a panacea, but it is a valuable tool, especially in a case like this where one is trying to track down a bug in an appleScript.
