It makes sense to me now, but only because I watched the video here (same one I linked to the other week in the thread ‘creating your own commands'):
In general, Apple documentation fails whenever it tries to get pedagogical because the writers fail to distinguish between the demand for completeness (required for reference material) and the restriction of relevance (only tell the learner what they need to know to complete the objective). You can’t do both in the same document. That section of the Cocoa Scripting Guide is a textbook example of what happens when you try.
