Thank you for the pointers. I had the macosxautomation page. I'll have to check the book eventually.

Yes.
I've been able to do a number of interesting things on the Java app with UI scripting but setting values to a text field from a script is not one of them and I'm wondering why...

The trial version does not seem to allow the setting of a Target Application so I can only see that it gives me the same values as UIElementInspector. But my issue right now is how to set the value of AXSelectedText with a script when I can do it through UIElementInspector's UI.
