I originally called it just before showing a window modally, and it didn't make any difference. I moved it to before a call of [self window] that instantiates the window, and it worked.

Yes. The effect is kind of hard to describe, but for example, row highlights don't show. And although you can click inside text fields, nothing appears in them. For example, I have one open now, and if I click in a text field and type, it's appearing in this email rather than the text field.
