Thanks, Axel, but I don’t believe that example works in Java versions after 6. As I noted, AppleScript is no longer given as one of the items in the list of available scripting engines.

However, I did find this: https://netbeans.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=242171#c2
which has instructions for re-enabling the AppleScript engine (which I verified is still present in the library file rt.jar). Unfortunately I so far haven’t been able to get it recognized.
