That’s why I spoke about Apple’s implementation of Java; Java versions after 6 sure are Oracle implementations.
Apple’s latest incarnation is provided at:

As advertised, it is now legacy, still based upon Java 6, and will probably not be available after El Capitan anymore.
But you asked about an AppleScript ScriptEngine, and I seem to be able to invoke it here with Yosemite.
A Java guy should be able to have Apple’s Java implementation to coexist with a more current implementation from Oracle; but I’ve never been very clever with those Java matters… :-(
That said, as Has already wrote, osascript has now grown into a rather nice way to invoke AppleScripts from various contexts.

Hmmm, I didn’t know Oracle took the pain to implement an AppleScript engine.
Above bug report went about Oracle’s Java 7, and describes steps really intended for a Java guy… :-)
