That is all truly fascinating, and I thank you for working out all the details.
In the end, it is remarkably simple, n'est pas? The bit about .rtf vs. .txt
is particularly rich. But I really do need an RTF file, so that is a great
discovery.

And we all thought we knew so much about AppleScript!
Who would think that “open a new document in TextEdit”
would turn into a major research project? (I understand now
that the problem was really in the autosave feature of the
recent OS X releases, not AppleScript per se. I wonder how
many existing scripts this feature broke.)
