Simple.  Elegant, even.

When I first tried this, it seemed not to work.  With your encouragement, I
found that this technique simply takes a very long time.

Activity Monitor showed 100% CPU usage for hours and hours; however, my
machine, while very sluggish, was still useable during this time.  The
procedure even survived a Mail.app crash and relaunch, eventually running to
completion now almost a whole day later.

So now it's done, and my machine is much peppier.
