You said you wanted to see the number of files on the folder icon on the desktop. You don’t need folder actions to do that.
I said I wanted the icon to indicate the number of files in the folder.

This functionality already exists within Finder. Right-click on the folder, choose ‘View Options’ from the menu, and check the option called ‘Show item info’.
