I gave up. There's n Action script that will set the folder Label Index color based on the number of files contained.

But – right-click on the Desktop itself and select “Show View Options” – or just hit Cmd-J while in the Finder.
(Right-clicking on a folder IN the Finder does work but seems less intuitive – to me at least.)
The side-effect of course is that you'll probably end up with extended-info for more items than you want, because you can't limit the display to just the one folder.
It's not as spiffy as a badged icon would be, but it's quite a lot simpler.
The only way I've seen to change a Finder icon with a script is via a Unix exe
But it may be that ASObjC can do this now.
