Thanks for the suggestions.

The Adobe products would be great, I'm sure, but I do not have them and am not
willing to buy them for this little project.  However, using Cocoa with
AppleScript I had not thought of.  Very interesting idea.

Would you have a suggestion where I could learn to use these together to make a
diagram consisting of a few [dozen] colored rectangles and some text, then
store it in a file?

Speed is unimportant for this project.
