Jon,
Your suggestion seems to be give up on this automation thing and go build an
app that does something on a phone. With over $100 billion paid to app store
developers by Apple in the past 10 years it’s hard to argue you couldn’t make a
buck by ‘following the money’.
But I’m not quite ready to give up my automation career yet. US workers are
paid over 8 trillion dollars every year, a large percentage of which is paid
for people doing something productive with computers. I still believe there is
a way to ‘follow the money’ by figuring out how to automate the work of people,
despite the security and technological challenges. The ability to solve
automation problems of all kinds is basically what I get paid for.

Oh oracle of scripting and automation... what do you see as the future of
automation involving the control of other applications?
Frankly, the future is mobile, and AppleScript isn’t even there. There’s some
effort within Apple to enhance the Shortcuts app, but it’s no AppleScript, or
even Automator.
These days, application security means avoiding these useful kinds of user
automation, since they can often be hijacked. I’m not sure how the future can
mitigate these risks. The “This app wants to control that app” dialog certainly
isn’t going to suffice.
In the meantime, either write an app for distribution and/or sale, or stitch
together some apps for a local or in-house solution. Just because it’s not the
future doesn’t mean it’s not useful right now.
