How on earth is someone supposed to interpret how to actually use 'When you see " bounds].origin", it means the origin of the bounds, and bounds in this case is an NSRect.' unless they already know what the hell they're doing, in which case they wouldn't be asking for help.

Well you could always try looking at that book sitting on your computer. Start by searching for contentView, which will take you to Chapter 12, about manipulation content views. Or just search for NSRect, which will take you to code in chapter 10, as well as page 208, and the explanation of an NSRect.
I didn't put looking in my book in the list of trouble-shooting tips because it seemed a bit obvious, and not everyone has it. But you do -- so why not use it?
(I'm sorry you feel so frustrated, but spare a thought for me. I wrote a book covering lots of this stuff, you have the book, and I still see you posting these questions without first looking in the book. How frustrated do you think that makes me feel?)
